La Garapacha Walk, Friday 26 February
» See the Photos here. The weather was a welcome change and kind to us for this walk (as you know we have been taking a battering over February). The sun was shining, the wind had died down and the temperature had increased somewhat compared to previous days. All-in-all perfect walking weather and as the walk progressed, layers of clothes wear coming off!
Alan Smith led the walk which started at the La Garapacha Church on the hill, an excellent start point and general area. Considering the 40 minute drive ( always very pleasant and scenic ) from Hondon the turn-out was very good. I didn’t count but think about 22 / 26 people were in attendance today.
Alan explained the walk details and said the views would not disappoint. He was right! (see some of the pictures). There are also information boards dotted on this popular walk. This was a moderately paced and great circular trek mostly on marked tracks through wooded and mountainous / gorge like sections. There are some interesting rock formations too. At times, as we gained height and we looked out on the valleys and plain, the views were spectacular on such a clear day.
Apart from some rocky, higher step throughs and narrow pathways this walk was testing at times but very doable with plenty of stop points to take water or rest. Overall one of the nicest scenic walks we have had. An absolute pleasure, with well behaved dogs, great company and a very pleasant healthy way to spend 3 hours. Well done to Alan (leader) and Phil (back marker) for their work and knowledge. There were lots of smiling faces at the end. Look forward to the next one.
Directions: From Frailes head through Macisvenda and Barinas, turning left at the junction towards Fortuna. Go through Baños de Fortuna and at the first set of traffic lights when entering Fortuna turn right (Signposted La Garapacha). Once you arrive at La Garapacha, turn left and then immediately right up the steep slope to the church.
Alternatively, meet at El Fogón, Hondón de Los Frailes, (38.271683°N -0.941536°W) ready to depart at 9.15am
Lunch: Nothing arranged, but I will be finding lunch in/around Los Baños de Fortuna. Everyone is welcome to join me!
Description: A circular walk starting on metalled roads out of the village and moving onto unmade tracks amongst the almond fields with spectacular mountain views (Bring your camera!!). The outward leg then descends along the southern side of a rambla to reach a barranco. The route then climbs the barranco to a col where we pick up another unmade track along the northern side of the rambla which we follow back to the village.
Equipment: Walking boots providing ankle support recommended and a stick or pole if you feel uncomfortable on loose footings.
Other: This walk is in an area which is new to our walking group and is consistent with my aim of introducing the group to new areas and/or slightly more demanding routes. Journey time from Hondón de Los Frailes is approximately 35 mins, but is well worth the effort with spectacular views throughout.
Dogs: Well behaved dogs under owner control welcome.
Any shortage of blossom on the Almond Blossom Walk earlier this month should be more than made up for on this walk !
